Why I Chose Chemical Engineering

Alhamdulillah, in 2016 I graduated from senior high school. Now, I’m grateful to have been accepted into one of the best private universities in Indonesia the Indonesian Islamic University (UII), where I’m studying Chemical Engineering.

You may ask, “Why did you choose Chemical Engineering?”

Honestly, at first, I didn’t know much about it. I only had a little idea about what would be learned in this field, the job prospects, and what makes it interesting. But one thing I was sure of: I loved chemistry.

in high school, I even participated in chemistry olympiads for two consecutive years because I was truly passionate about it. However, I later discovered that Chemical Engineering is not just about chemistry. It also involves learning how to convert raw materials into useful products a blend of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and engineering.

So, if you enjoy physics and math, this major is a great choice for you too. It’s also perfect for those who love research, since there are not only classroom activities, but also plenty of time in the laboratory doing experiments.

The career prospects for Chemical Engineering graduates are broad. You can work in various industries such as chemicals, medicine, food, manufacturing, laboratories, education, wastewater treatment even in banking! It gives you the freedom to choose your own path.

As a Chemical Engineering student, you’ll become very familiar with the periodic table, understand the chemicals that exist in nature, and learn how to process them into something useful.

What’s also interesting is that Chemical Engineering isn’t just about calculations. You’ll also learn how to design factories, develop industrial processes, and analyze production equipment a bit like being an architect, but for systems and machines.

In a world facing energy problems, Chemical Engineering gives us the tools to create solutions such as biodegradable plastics, alternative fuels, and more. You have the potential to help many people.

And you won’t just be limited to working for others. You can start your own business, like making soap, perfume, virgin coconut oil, or other products  creating jobs for others as well.

With hard work, determination, sacrifice, and prayer, I believe that a Chemical Engineering student can make real changes in the world. This journey requires focus, commitment, and passion but it’s worth it.
